A contaminated site is a site which is contaminated by hazardous waste or pollution and may pose a negative impact on human health or the environment. Mines, factories, fuel depots, orchards and timber processing plants are some examples.

An assessment on a contaminated site helps determining the level and extent of contamination and the possible remediation options for the particular site. The goal of such assessment is to remove pollution or contaminants from environmental media such as soil, groundwater or sediment, etc., for the protection of human health as well as site redevelopment.
